Iris grew up on Vancouver Island and attended university in Saskatchewan and Manitoba.  She discovered the benefits of holistic healing while experiencing a personal health crisis in 1995. Suffering from PTSD, Iris sought out help beyond the standard western practices and was amazed at the relief and peace of mind, which came from holistic work.  She is trained in several modalities and is one of many people in Canada to be certified in CranioSacral Therapy.  One of Iris’ success stories, where surgery was no longer needed is documented in the book, Working Wonders:  Changing Lives With the CranioSacral Therapy, published by North Atlantic Books

Iris listens to the client’s body, she listens with her hands, thoughts, energy and intuition.  By doing this she can tune into the healing mechanisms and offer assistance.  The clients body is always in charge and may not be aware of the problem or what is needed.  Their body knows the information and transmits it.  

Healing comes from within and our bodies have a natural tendency to heal.  If your body is injured, has a poor diet or environmental influences, then it may not be able to heal on its own.    Iris’s job is to help the bodies natural healing mechanisms and navigate all the roadblocks so the body can do its job.  The treatment is fully client driven.  The client does not need to be consciously aware of what is required.  

The work is very gentle and light.  Movements are never forced on or into the body.  All work is done in a relaxed atmosphere with the client fully clothed, resting on a massage table.

6 self-renewal suggestions for the busy practitioner

Self-care. Self-renewal. They are vague concepts we push on our clients for their ‘take-home’ after a massage treatment. It all seems so achievable at the moment – but where to begin? Axe-throwing? A grown-up bouncy castle? As massage therapists, are we taking note of our own homework?

Are we implementing our grand ideas for meditation and Epsom soaks? A quick poll among colleagues usually reveals how infrequently we follow our own advice. When did you last have a massage? Sleep-in? Exercise four times a week? Eat mindfully?

It all starts with a ‘To Don’t’ list. As a Virgo, I’m notorious for making lists. It’s my default setting. To Don’t lists are even more satisfying, though, because they give you permission to say no and be the centre of attention. Don’t turn on your phone. Don’t get sucked into another mindless Netflix series. Don’t give up your long run to take that extra last-minute shift.

Once you start To-Don’t-ing, you’ll be amazed at the time you’ve created to explore, unwind and indulge. Meditation can take many forms and self-renewal doesn’t have to involve yoga or pea sprouts or green tea (unless you like that sort of thing).

Here are six ways to start self-nourishing:

Smooth transition. Kick-start your day with a Green Sparkle Smoothie. Joy McCarthy is the Founder of Joyous Health, a certified holistic nutritionist, best-selling author and TV personality. Her latest book, Joyous Detox, was designed as a plan and cookbook for detoxing naturally every day. Her recipes are gluten-free, dairy-free, refined sugar-free and emphasize specific detox-friendly foods that are simply delicious and fully nourishing.

Sensory overload. Skip Netflix, get a Nature Fix. Florence Williams’ marvelous book, The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative, is the emotional equivalent of Arnica. The lesson is easy to digest: “The more nature, the better you feel.” It may sound folksy, but, after a walk in the woods, I think you’ll agree with her. The sensory appeal of wet earth, cedar, bird song and a panting dog at your side is the perfect balm for all that ails you. We all suffer from “epidemic dislocation from the outdoors” to some degree, and it’s a fun one to combat.

Sensory deprivation. Maybe you want sensory deprivation instead. The Rest Nest Float Club in Yorkville (Toronto) promises the “incredible stress-melting sensation of nothing at all.” Float pods create a sanctuary like no other. Float in 10 inches of water containing over 800 pounds of dissolved magnesium salts. No light. No sound. Here, you can “eliminate sensory inputs” and disappear for 60 seriously tranquil minutes.

Start a stress-free book club. If accumulating CEUs is stressing you out – here’s a winning combo. Start a self-care-focussed book club with a few of your favourite massage therapists. Choose books like Brene Brown’s Daring Greatly. It’s all about vulnerability and imperfection. “Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable, or to dare greatly.” Brene Brown is the best cheerleader and thought leader to have in your self-care tool-kit. It’s the perfect club starter book – followed by Eat, Pray, Love Made Me Do It: Life Journeys Inspired by the Bestselling Memoir (Riverhead). Elizabeth Gilbert’s cult book and Hollywood movie inspired a ripple audience: more than 50 women who were so influenced by her book that they made radical changes to their own lives. Maybe it will change yours too!

Spin out. Try something new and fabulous like Soul Cycle in Toronto (the first in Canada). The boutique spin studio is synonymous with an amazing playlist, a dimly-lit room and instructors who speak only in soulful, inspirational messages. Instructors go through a 10-week soul-intensive training in New York, so you’re in good hands. The last 10 minutes of class pops a wheelie when it kicks on the party lights and dance music in a gym-meet-dance-club mash-up. It’s $30 for a bike and shoe rental and the price tag includes full towel service, Saje facial products, hair ties, gum and water. Deal!

Stretch and surf. Grab a gang and book a soul-selfish week in Nicaragua. In Maderas Village you can check in to a Yoga and Surf Camp. Green Sparkle Smoothie
Makes 1 or 2 smoothies

  • 1/2 banana
  • 1 apple, cut in half and cored
  • 1 cup (250ml) loosely packed torn fresh kale
  • 3/4 cup (175ml) fresh or frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1/4 cup shelled hemp seeds
  • 1 tbsp (15ml) grated fresh ginger
  • 1 1/2 cups (375ml) coconut water
  • Filtered water, just enough for desired consistency

Place all ingredients except water in a blender. Blend for 30-60 seconds, until smooth, adding water as needed.

A Thorough Guide to Declutter Your Home

Learn How to Declutter with Professional Organization Tips

Everyone has a little ‘junk’ lying around the house. OK, some of us may have more than a little. Regardless of how much stuff we have, we can all benefit from getting rid of clutter and excess things we don’t need any more, or things we haven’t even seen in a while.

According to Psychology Today, clutter can be bad for your health as people tend to feel life is out of control when they are surrounded with more things than they can manage. The mess causes stress. If you’re not taking care of the clutter in your home, you may not be taking care of yourself either.

When is clutter a problem? For many people clutter can be an energy zapper or they waste inordinate amounts of time looking for things they can’t find. In extreme cases, people may suffer from obesity or depression when a life of consumption extends beyond ‘stuff.’ In hoarding situations, a house full of clutter can cause fire hazards and other health complications when mold and dust are present.

Clutter is classified as anything you’re keeping that doesn’t add value to your life. Decluttering is all about making room in your home for the things that matter. Many people enjoy decluttering because it relieves stress by providing a sense of control and accomplishment. For others, getting rid of the junk frees up a little extra space in the house that wasn’t there before. Some people may just need to purge before they move to a new house.

Step 1: Set Goals

Before you get started, make a plan. No matter how many rooms or how much clutter you have to get through, starting with specific goals will help you create a plan that will reduce any frustration as you go.

  • Write down or make a map of all the rooms and ‘clutter hot-spots’ you want to tackle.
  • Give each space a grade based on the severity of the clutter. For example, on a scale of 1 – 3 (3 being the most cluttered), a particularly messy room or closet would get a 3. This will help you prioritize your time.
  • Do one room or one space at a time.
  • Set completion dates for each phase of your cleanup. Be sure to pick dates that are attainable so you don’t get frustrated. If you make it into a declutter challenge for yourself, it may feel a bit more like a game.
  • In addition to completion dates, you should plan time to work on specific areas when you expect decluttering those spaces to take longer than a few hours, such as a basement or a garage.

Step 2: Create a Sorting System

As you go through your house you will need a system for sorting the items you find. You can create your own method, or use one of the “Three-Box Method.” This method forces you to make a decision item by item.

The Three Box Method:

KEEP BOX: Empty after you complete a space. Items you keep should go in their newly designated home. Optimally these things should be stored neatly in a container or drawer. Label if desired.

GET RID OF BOX: Empty after you complete a space. Store any items you want to give away or sell outside your home – either put them in the vehicle you plan to transport them in or store them temporarily in a garage or an attic.

STORAGE BOX: Empty into storage containers after you complete a space. As you fill your containers, label them or drop an inventory sheet on top and neatly put them in your storage area.

Step 3: Get Rid of the Clutter

You have a few options for disposing of items that make their way into the “Get Rid of It” box.

  • Recycle: Glass, plastics and paper can go straight into your recycling bin. Otherwise put into bags so you can transport to the nearest recycling drop off location.

Electronics can and should be recycled.

  • Donate: You can rest easy knowing that something you no longer need is going to a good home. Clothes, shoes and other household items can be donated to local charities. Or try posting to your local Buy and Sell.
     
  • Have a Garage Sale: If you’re up to the task, make a little money off your clutter by having a garage sale. Check to see if your neighborhood has a designated garage sale date. Just make sure you begin your declutter process early enough so you can participate – you’ll get more foot traffic that way.

Commit to Get Rid of the Junk

If you’ve got clutter, we’re certain you have some “junk”. And while it may not be junk per se, it may no longer be useful. Making the decision to get rid of your old things may actually be the hardest part of decluttering. Many items will have more than just a monetary value –they will stir up memories and have sentimental value. These are real and valid feelings that make it challenging to part with our stuff.

Remember, you have options when it comes to getting rid of clutter, so you don’t have to feel guilty about putting everything in the trash. Mentally prepare yourself for decluttering your home and keep the following concepts in mind when you are struggling to part with something.

The 80/20 Rule: When it comes to clothing, we generally only wear 20 percent of the clothes we own 80 percent of the time. This rule tends to hold true for other things as well, such as video games, computer parts, books, DVDs, toys and more. Your mission is to get rid of the things you don’t use 80 percent of the time.

Getting Over Sunk Costs. In the world of economics, costs that have already been incurred and cannot be recovered are referred to as sunk costs. As you go through the items in your house, most things should be considered sunk costs (except for rare situations where an item may have increased in value). Since you cannot get the money back that you spent on that item, you should only think about the value that thing can add to your life in the future. Understanding this concept of sunk costs can help you make more rational decisions about what to keep and what you should toss.

Here are more declutter tips to help you decide what to keep and what to throw away:

See if it works. If whatever treasure you found stashed away in your house doesn’t work, get rid of it. If you want to fix it, then fix it, but don’t let it sit in your house for another month collecting dust.

Think of the last time you used it. If you haven’t used something you come across in the last 6 months, you should probably get rid of it. If you pulled the item out and said, “I’ve been wondering where this was!” you should probably get rid of it. And if you didn’t even know you still had the item in question, you should definitely get rid of it.

There’s a neat trick you can use with clothing, books and DVDs. Over the course of the year, when you use or wear an item put it back facing the opposite direction of the others. This allows you to see what you’ve used and what you haven’t. If you haven’t used or worn something in a year, get rid of it.

Ask yourself if you love it. This may seem obvious, but sometimes we keep things we aren’t completely crazy about. Yes, we spend money on things we don’t love but if you don’t love it, and you haven’t used it in more than 6 months “Get Rid of It”.

Sleep on it. After you’ve made the decision to get rid of some of the clutter in your home, sleep on it. If there’s something you can’t live without, you’ll know in the morning. You can pull it out of the junk bin and put it away.

Start With Small Decluttering Projects That Feel Big

Before you commit to an entire room, start with a few small projects that will give you a sense of accomplishment when you’re done.

“If you are overwhelmed with your clutter and just don’t know where to start, start small. Tackle one drawer, one shelf, or one corner of your desk. Set a timer and work for 15 minutes and accomplish as much as you can. Taking baby steps can eventually lead to a big change in your clutter level.”

Cleaning out your digestive tract, colon with a cleanse will get rid of undigested food particles, parasites and toxins.  This a gentler way of releasing toxins. It is for a shorter period of time just by changing your diet.  If a deeper state of cleansing and healing is required, than by giving your body a complete protein will allow blood sugar levels will be maintained.  

Commonly the right time to detox or cleanse is the spring and fall. To detox the liver in the spring is a natural time when liver energy is rising.  Autumn is a great time to cleanse the large intestine which is a major organ.  

Another factoring component to planning a cleanse or detox is stress.  Stress may hold on to the toxins you are wanting to eradicate.  Lower levels of stress helps the body heal itself.  Listen to your body it will tell you when a detox or cleanse is what you need.

10-minute consult at Alberta Gift Fair yields 21.5% increase in sales

Geraldine Barrett, owner of Sunrise Wellness Spa in Unity, Sask., along with her staff, Verlie Deuchar and Ellie Leidl, attended the Alberta Gift Fair last August and chose to sit in on my seminar on “What to Put Where and Why”. Geraldine had been unhappy with her feature wall that displayed Eminence Organic Skin Care, however she could not see any alternative.

During the session, the Sunrise team saw how implementing effective category plans enabled retailers to create effective merchandise displays. At the end of the session, Geraldine raced to sign up to my 20-minute consultation. Unfortunately, all my sessions were booked, however, I accommodated the Sunrise team with just 10 minutes to spare before I had to catch my flight.

Geraldine pulled out photos of their current displays while Ellie drew a rough floor plan. I discussed basic options for colours, a simple fixturing plan with an optimum product intensity, the concept of focal points and the strategic use of triangular shapes. More importantly, I brought up the importance all these elements combined have in enhancing perceived product values.

 

Within 5 days of the session, the ladies had all their shelves emptied. The slat wall panel was removed and all other fixtures sold. The team limited the quantity displayed on their new set-up and stored the rest. They accomplished this feat within 12 days! In all, the project cost $1588. However, they sold some old fixtures for $630 resulting in a total cost of $958!

Sunrise Wellness Spa hosted their second annual Eminence Pajama Party on September 29 and the guests were indeed impressed with the spacious shopping area. Their Eminence Regional Trainer, Christel Salamon from Churchbridge, Sask. was taken aback upon seeing the new display. Comments were most favourable with a lot of wows.

The results: Compared to last year’s same 12 day period after the Pajama Party, sales went up 21.5%

Parabens?

While at training we learned a few new fun facts about parabens that even we weren’t aware of. Parabens are a chemically made preservatives that are found in many day to day products, especially cosmetic products. While originally it was said that these preservatives were safe to use, some research shows that might not be the case anymore. Not only has research shown that parabens may be linked to cancer, but it was also brought to our attention that the chemical structure of parabens is nearly identical to those of estrogen cells. So close in fact that our bodies can’t tell the difference between the two, leading women’s bodies to believe they have higher levels of estrogen than they actually do. Crazy right?

When attending the Alberta Gift Fair in Edmonton we attended a seminar by Natalie Tan with the topic of what to put where and why. Natalie focused on effective planning for today’s customer. She mentioned that IKEA was her go to business to get shelving to create this new effective look. At the end of the seminar Natalie offered a Free 20 minute consultation to anyone who wanted help. Geraldine left her business card hoping that we would be chosen. After lunch the Spa name was announced over the speaker system and we made our way to the show room. Geraldine quickly opened her phone and showed pictures of the spa and the wall she was wishing to change. Before they knew it Natalie had a plan on paper with ideas of color, position of the shelves using the triangle focal point and to add plenty of lighting. Shopping began as soon as we left the Gift Show to set the plan in motion.

 

 

Geraldine decided on shelving from Home Hardware, drawers from Home Depot and additional shelves from IKEA. Shopping continued in their local Guy’s Furniture to find the right side table and lamp to compliment the waiting area. A peaceful sanctuary to serve tea in beautiful new tea service sets.
