Sebaceous Filaments Vs. Blackheads – What’s the Difference? by: Jen Okhiria February 5, 2019 Updated on February 7, 2019 If you’ve ever suffered a smattering of blackheads that just don’t clear away, take a closer look. You might not be dealing with blackheads at all, but sebaceous filaments instead. While similar to blackheads, sebaceous filaments are a different animal altogether. What Are Sebaceous Filaments? Unlike blackheads, sebaceous filaments are not a clogged hair follicle that needs to be cleared away. Rather, they are a completely normal function of the skin. As Dr. Lily Talakoub of McLean Dermatology and Skincare Center explained to us, “Sebaceous filaments are particles released from oil glands. Blackheads are oxidized keratin (produced by the squamous cells of the skin). Because they are open to the air, they oxidize and look black.” Sebaceous filaments are needed in order to carry sebum through the hair follicle to the...Read More

Breast Health and the Right Bra BENEFITS OF BREAST SELF-EXAM (BSE) August 25, 2015 Blog By Norma E. Roth No one knows your body better than you. That’s why it’s so important to become familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel. The more aware you are, the easier it is to identify changes you see or feel in your breasts. A routine breast self-exam (BSE) includes looking at and touching your breasts. A regular BSE, combined with a clinical breast exam (performed by a doctor) and annual mammography, is considered a useful strategy for optimum breast screening. BSE is still regarded as a useful and effective tool for checking changes in your breasts. Beginning in their 20’s (or even younger), women can benefit from performing monthly BSEs. Lilikoi Sun Defense Lilikoi Sun Defense Collection How does it work? While both mineral and chemical sunscreens protect your skin from the sun’s powerful rays, the way all-mineral protection works is much different. Mineral formulations use natural compounds like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to block the sun from your skin, whereas chemical sunscreens change UV rays into heat, which is then absorbed and released by your skin. A simple way to understand how mineral sunscreen works is to imagine the sun’s harmful rays ‘reflected’ upon contact with the top dermal layers of the skin. Shield yourself from the elements with the 3 all-mineral products. They are designed to protect you from environmental stressors, including pollution, blue light and the sun. Layer them together for comprehensive protection or wear them individually with other products from your skin care routine. Mix and match with the rest of your Eminence favorites. Lilikoi...Read More
