SST Training in Saskatoon

sst cosmetics

We were very excited to get to Saskatoon this week for training with SST Cosmetics! The day was fun and knowledge filled for everyone, we absolutely love the line and what the company stands for. SST is a Canadian, mineral based cosmetics company located in Saskatoon, SK. They use the highest quality minerals from around the world to ensure the best in their products. SST is also a Paraben Free, Talc Free, Boron Nitride Free, Gluten Free and Cruelty Free company which means a lot to many people today

Parabens?

While at training we learned a few new fun facts about parabens that even we weren’t aware of. Parabens are a chemically made preservatives that are found in many day to day products, especially cosmetic products. While originally it was said that these preservatives were safe to use, some research shows that might not be the case anymore. Not only has research shown that parabens may be linked to cancer, but it was also brought to our attention that the chemical structure of parabens is nearly identical to those of estrogen cells. So close in fact that our bodies can’t tell the difference between the two, leading women’s bodies to believe they have higher levels of estrogen than they actually do. Crazy right?

SST has some great new products, all of which of course, are 100% paraben free. One of our favorites is the Age Eraser Hydrating Foundation. This offers full coverage and is infused with Peony flower root to make sure you stay hydrated all day! The hyaluronic acid binds with water causing a slight swelling in the skin. This swelling diminishes the look of fine lines and wrinkles. Not only that, but the foundation has been scientifically proven to reduce the depth of wrinkles by 33.8% after only 4 weeks of use! Stop in the spa and come try it out for yourself. One of the girls would be more than happy to help!

When do you use Tea Tree Oil?

When do you use Tea Tree Oil?

Here are some great uses for tea tree oil.

Acne Treatment

Tea tree oil can be used as a preventative measure, but more impressively as a cure when it comes to those dreaded pimples. It serves as a natural alternative for over the counter products, and possesses unique disinfecting and soothing properties which won’t strip the skin of its natural oils. Dab it on – for a quick spot-reduction, pour a few drops onto a cotton bud or pad, and dab the affected area. Don’t rinse for at least a few hours, ideally leave overnight. The oil should easily penetrate into the sebaceous glands and unblock them, wiping out infection-causing bacteria and reducing redness and swelling. Slather it on – Add a few drops to a face mask, preferably clay, and slather it on. Ideally leave it for 20 minutes before rinsing. Pat face dry with a clean towel and apply a moisturizer. Make sure you’re moisturizing with a cream preferably designed for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Laundry Hack

Keep things fresh and sanitary by adding a few drops to each laundry load. Preferably use an unscented detergent and no fabric softener. Say goodbye to that strong chemical odor of most detergents, and hello to all-natural cleanliness. Note how once you start using this method, your clothes, sheets and towels stay fresher for longer. Extra tip – Stay low-key on the detergent use and put your towels through a baking soda and white vinegar cycle once a month. The vinegar and baking soda work to remove detergent, microbe and odor build-up, improving fiber absorbency. The result is spa-quality fluffy towels that smell as fresh as a spring field! Simply add one cup of white vinegar to the load and run the wash through a hot cycle. When the cycle is done, add half a cup of baking soda and run the hot cycle again. Preferably dry in a tumble dryer to fluff up the fibers.

Congestion Relief

If you’re blocked up from a common cold, tea tree can be a great relief treatment! The antiseptic properties work to help fight the microbes while the anti-inflammatory qualities help reduce swelling of the membranes lining the respiratory passages. Vaporize it – If you have a vaporizer or oil burner, you can let it evaporate throughout the day, especially useful at night. Mix tea tree with lavender for a relaxing effect at night time. Steam it – Boil the kettle and pour yourself a hot mug of plain water. Place a few drops of tea tree essential oil into the mug and take deep, long breaths holding it up to your face. Steam works wonders to clear the sinuses, and is an effective method of reducing mucus build-up. A hot bath with tea tree oil is another way of getting that steam to relax the passages. Eucalyptus essential oil is another great alternative. Wear it – Place a few drops on your clothing, pillow case or a cloth and inhale it throughout the day. Reapply as often as required.

All-Natural Carpet Freshener

Most carpet cleaning products contain harmful ingredients that you wouldn’t want a baby crawling over, or a pet laying on. It’s just better for everyone if your fill your living space with natural alternatives rather than harsh chemicals. This cleaning method is not only cheaper and healthier, it actually keeps things fresher for longer without leaving that lingering synthetic fragrance we usually find after a deep cleaning. A homemade pet-safe and child-friendly cleaning agent can easily be concocted with an essential oil of your choice (or blend) and baking soda. Use this mixture to rid your living space of dust mites, creepy-crawly’s, bacteria, mold spores and odor Note – This is a very effective method of deep cleaning carpets, and needn’t be done more than once every 1 – 2 months. If you own pets, this is a great way of keeping the odor and microbes away from your upholstery, however, keep your pets out of the house or confined to one room while the powder sits. Bear in mind the powder does make your vacuum work harder, so don’t go overboard and maintain your machine as the instructions suggest.

  • ½ cup Baking Soda, 35 drops of Tea Tree essential oil
  • Add the desired amount of essential oil into a container of baking soda and shake well. Leave the mixture to sit overnight.
  • When ready to clean, pepper all carpeted areas with your mixture and let it sit for at least 15 minutes before vacuuming.

Tea Tree Oil is also a great aid in treating nail fungus. Apply a couple times a day until fungus is gone.

Jessica Cosmetics CEO Talks Treatments

Founder and CEO of Jessica Cosmetics International, Jessica Vartoughian believes cuticles and fingernails must be cared for and maintained like the skin with a regimen unique to the individual.

Founder and CEO of Jessica Cosmetics International, Jessica Vartoughian believes nails must be cared for and maintained like the skin with a regimen unique to the individual. Sold worldwide, the Jessica product line boasts a wide assortment of treatment products, more than 230 Custom Colors, Phenom, Effects, the GELeration Soak-Off Gel System, Zen Spa Pedicure, and Fusion 2.5.2 Pedicure. NAILS asked Vartoughian for advice about nail treatments.

What is your advice to nail techs on how to assess their clients’ nails to know what kind of treatment products would be most beneficial?

Vartoughian: Analyzing your clients’ nails is the cornerstone of my system and a key benefit in keeping lifelong clients. Dry and brittle nails require much needed moisture in a base coat treatment, as well as daily cuticle care. It is essential to massage cuticle creams daily and oils at night. (We always recommend our Nourish Cuticle Crème and Phenomen Oil for healthy nail growth.) Nails that are soft and weak need strengthening agents to help reinforce them. These products should only be used for four to six weeks until the nail condition improves. We offer a complete Nail Analysis Chart that explains the properties of each nail condition and will help you determine nail types and appropriate solutions.

Why do you say that strengtheners should only be used on a limited basis?

Vartoughian: If you choose to only use a strengthening product, this will adversely affect the nails after extended use. The nails will become too hard and strong and eventually break. It is important to be conscious of the products you regularly use and be sure you monitor the nail condition from appointment to appointment.

What sorts of nail treatment products are most helpful for older hands?

Vartoughian: Moisture, moisture, moisture…it’s the key ingredient for the nails, skin, and hair. Choosing base coat treatment products with conditioners and water helps keep the nails flexible and healthy. We have a few products that treat this condition — Rejuvenation Basecoat for Dry Nails, Recovery Basecoat for Brittle Nails, and Bend Don’t Break, which keeps nails strong yet flexible. As I mentioned earlier, cuticle care is just as important; the added conditioning and moisturizing helps feed the matrix and allows for the new nail to grow in healthy.

What about restoring the natural nail after enhancements? What approach is best?

Vartoughian: I have learned over the years that it is best to treat the new nail growing in before removing the enhancements. This allows the client time to adjust during the transition. Sometimes if you remove enhancements entirely before beginning the natural nail restoration, it shocks the client as well as the nail and may take longer. Using our Restoration after acrylic/damaged nail base coat treatment, we treat the new nail growing in while trimming and managing the enhancement. The process should take approximately four weeks.

How have gel-polishes impacted consumers’ treatment needs?

Vartoughian: Gel-polishes have certainly impacted the nail industry and allowed consumers to have a manicure of convenience. I think the biggest impact for the client is everyone offers gel manicures but they don’t necessarily follow the proper protocols to apply and remove them. This causes much more damage to the nail and we are seeing many people shift from gels back to natural nail care. One of the key benefits of our GELeration line is that we come from a place of my natural nail philosophy. It is a gentle gel, but procedures must be followed to ensure damage-free nails.

Do you have an upcoming event? Are your nails in poor condition?

Please remember that your concerns sometimes can not all be addressed with one visit. Your nails may require weeks or even months of treatment prior to an event.

Call and book a manicure at least 3 months prior to your celebration to receive a full hand and nail consultation and treatment plan. 306 – 228 – 2808

My Passion, My Vision, My Dream of a European Spa

I have a passion for natural wellness. I believe in living a healthy, active and balanced lifestyle.

After providing and completing 20 years of service in Massage Therapy to the community of Unity. I had the desire to add more value to my services.

I pursued Massage Therapy as a career because of all the help I received 38 years ago. I was so grateful and I wanted to help half as many people as the late Grace Thain from Mid Night Lake had helped over the span of 40 years. I believe I would and have provided a great service to Unity and District.

Once again I was faced with psoriasis and checked out all the options for treatment, there was little out there for me to choose from. Through research I found European Spas offered natural treatments for psoriasis. Twenty years ago there was no training in Saskatchewan so I ventured to acquire the training that I needed.

I went to Raleigh, South Carolina, and Minneapolis to get and understand developing a Spa. I had a number of plans and dreams were grandiose. I continued pursuing training for spa services. I then traveled to Oakland, California to learn about body wraps and different kinds of mud and how to wrap. There is an art to this

I journeyed to Las Vegas to the I SPA (International Spa Association) and there I gained many contacts and was overwhelmed with all the choices one had to make regarding products from all over the world! Here I connected with a company call Moor, which offers the most amazing mud that I still use in the Spa today.

My next journey was to Santa Fe, New Mexico where a German couple came to teach the Kniepe method of spa treatments. It was fascinating and exciting to learn all the health benefits that could be addressed through the use of Hot and Cold Water Treatments under high pressure. Learning that all showers and baths should end with ice cold water for great health benefits.

Other amazing body treatments that I learned about and continue to provide at the Spa:

  • Body Brushing using natural bristle brushes
  • Body Wraps using linen material, European mud, peat and seaweed from all over the world and from different depths of the oceans
  • Hydrotherapy using the Kniepe Method

These body treatments will help with different skin problems, calm nervous system reducing stress load on body, reduce swelling from legs, detoxify and re energize the body.

This in not magic or an overnight quick fix, it take time. To restore for body and to address any ailments the body has it take time. We suggest doing 6 consecutive treatments as well as setting up a specific home care system for 30 days. It is absolutely regenerating and reviving experience.

I continue to attend yearly Spa conferences in Vancouver or Vegas. One has to keep up with the industry. When I travel I go and experience different spa treatments to see what they are like and see if I would bring them into my spa.

Today there are many “Spas” but few that offer the treatment with water or all the mud treatments.

Call and Book your Body Wraps/ Exfoliation or Hydrotherapy Treatments.

Experience all of this right here in Unity!

Fall Skin Care Tips

Written By: Christie Pike

There are so many things to love about fall – cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, crisp fresh air and that feeling of change that comes with every new season. Falling leaves could be the first indication that change is in the air, but our skin can also show the effects of a seasonal transition. Seasonal change can leave our skin feeling dull, dry and dehydrated – but it doesn’t have to be that way.

We have 5 simple skin care tips that will help give you that perfect glow all season long:

  1. Don’t forget your Eminence SPF
  1. Exfoliate
  • Exfoliation is the key to glowing skin. As we age, our natural ability to regenerate new skin cells slows. This can cause surface build-up which can leave our skin looking congested, dry and dull. We recommend:
  • Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant(daily treatment)
  • Yam & Pumpkin Enzyme Peel 5% (weekly treatment)
  1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
  • Autumn brings cool, windy weather which can cause your skin to become dry and dehydrated. The fall season is the perfect time to correct any sun damage caused by summer heat and sunshine. Make sure to pick a moisturizer or masque that works best for your skin type. If your skin is extra dry, don’t be afraid to use heavier, natural, oil-based products. We recommend:
  • Facial Recovery Oil
  • Pumpkin Latte Hydration Masque
  1. Body care is a must. Skin care doesn’t stop at your neckline – it’s important to moisturize and treat every beautiful inch of your skin. To help keep your skin healthy (after that summer tan) look for products that nourish and even out your skin tone. We recommend:

Stone Crop Body Lotion

  1. Protect your lips. The cool fall weather can leave your lips feeling dry and cracked. Protect and moisturize your lips daily with a non-petroleum based lip balm to keep your lips kissable all year long. We recommend:

Autumn Chop Salad

Beauty starts from the inside out. It starts and ends with eating Healthy.

Written by Chloe Hunt:

With leaves turning orange and days growing shorter, our skin will soon feel the seasonal change that arrives with the cold autumn breeze. Fall ushers in lower temperatures that dry our complexions but also brings harvest produce to nourish our skin. Foods like apples, pears, pumpkins and yams are all packed with essential vitamins and nutrients – delicious sensory treats for our taste buds as well as our skin.

To celebrate the arrival of autumn we’ve put together a delicious vegan autumn salad recipe for you to enjoy.

With a blend of vitamin-rich ingredients, this Autumn Chop Salad crams in apples and pears loaded with antioxidants to fight the aging effects of free radicals. Generous spoonfuls of pumpkin seeds bring a rich source of zinc, a mineral needed for immunity and skin health. Yams are another star ingredient – packed with potassium, copper and manganese which energize your body and rejuvenate the skin. Paired with a complementary apple and Dijon mustard dressing, this salad will have you – and your skin – ready for the change in seasons.

AUTUMN CHOP SALAD

INGREDIENTS:
Salad:
(Use organic ingredients wherever possible)
•    ½ cup Granny Smith apple
•    ½ cup ripe pear
•    8 cups spinach
•    ½ cup yams, cut into small cubes
•    ½ cup beets, cut into small cubes
•    3 tablespoons pumpkin seeds
•    1 tablespoon cranberries

INSTRUCTIONS:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Chop the yams and beets into small cubes. On a well-oiled baking sheet, distribute the chopped yams and beets evenly and sprinkle with a pinch of salt. Bake the yam and beet cubes for approximately 20 minutes or until browned. While the yam and beet cubes are baking, chop the Granny Smith apples and the pear into small cubes. Once the yam and beet cubes are cooked and nicely browned on the outside, remove them from the oven and place them aside to cool. Once the yam and beet cubes have cooled, mix them with the apple, pear, pumpkin seeds and cranberries and lay them on a bed of spinach.

Salad Dressing:
•    2 tablespoons grainy Dijon mustard
•    1 tablespoon agave syrup
•    2 tablespoons applesauce
•    1 tablespoon pure apple cider vinegar
•    1 tablespoon olive oil

To make the dressing, simply pour all the ingredients into a jar or container, adding ingredients to adjust the taste as you please. Shake well when ready to serve.
